Who Told You That?
Unlearning What’s Holding You Back

We all carry stories, but which ones do we actually believe?
Have you ever experienced an event with someone, and while the story is being re-told you think, Wait, it didn’t happen that way. Or quite possibly, whatever was told didn’t happen at all.
This is often referred to as subjective experience or subjective perception—the idea that people can experience the same event but feel it or interpret it in completely different ways. You may be asking, Why does this happen? Well, because we all come from different backgrounds, so we experience things based on our own beliefs, emotions and perspectives.
We all carry stories. Some are told by us, and others are told to us, that shape how we show up, speak, and exist. All too often, these stories become limits and put our confidence at a standstill.
Here’s a secret, the most powerful growth can begin when you dismiss the belief that says you can’t.
Here are two ways to start unlearning what’s holding you bac
Expose Yourself to New Standards
I’m from the great city of Chicago. As a kid, we had these reading challenges where if you read a certain amount of books, you were able to get a free pizza from Pizza Hut. These days it sounds like a scam, but I absolutely LOVED the challenge. Don’t get me wrong, Pizza Hut is top tier, but once I got older and started to get exposed to real Chicago pizza, my standard for pizza took off. Many of our limiting beliefs come from what we didn’t see growing up or in our early careers. There have been several times in my own career where my standards have shifted once I’ve been exposed to a different level of excellence. Think of is this way, Pizza Hut vs. Lou Malnati’s, I’ll let you be the judge!
Call Out the Narrative
Let’s keep this simple. Ask: What belief is keeping me small? Where did I learn it? Is it even true? We can spend a lot of time believing in something is not true. Somewhere along the way we were told something, and we haven’t taken the time to challenge the belief. Confidence isn’t about getting everything right, but it is about progress. If there is something that is holding you back, call it out, and then figure out how to redefine what success can look like for you.
You aren’t meant to go through this lifetime being small. Your voice and who you are as a person is meant to be shared. I have belief in you, and I hope you continue to grow in your confidence and self-belief. As always, I’m wishing you the best!
