From Self to Service

Serving other people is not about weakness, serving others in actuality is one of the ultimate signs of strength. To be of service to someone else also requires a shift, a vision, and an evolution in our mindset. As leaders, we have a responsibility to lead by example and maintain perspective with a large scope of the world. Easier said than done. Just because you are in a position of power or have a title that states you are the final decision-maker, does not excuse you from the challenges and tests that life can bring daily. When ego and insecurity attempt to take charge, here are a couple of reminders of how to maintain balance and remember what leadership is about at its core:

Understanding the Shift:

Some of the best leaders that I’ve had the opportunity to work with have a high-level comprehension of vision, and they can inspire, motivate, and serve a cause that is bigger than oneself. Success tends to be focused on the individual, while significance is focused on others—service-oriented leaders consistently try to add value to others and contribute to society.

Collective Success:

If you are a leader who is driven by inclusivity, service, and collective success, you are most likely going against what culture is telling you to do. You are developing habits that may not be natural, but they are beneficial to the success of your organization and the happiness of your team members. Realizing that everyone has unique contributions is a source of innovation and propels creativity.

Questions for you to think about:

· What barriers or challenges are preventing those I lead from reaching their full potential?

· Am I actively listening to the needs and concerns of those I work with?

· What impact do my leadership decisions have on the well-being and development of those I lead?

Being a leader requires resilience, confidence, and belief, even when no one else does. The time commitment and trust in something bigger than yourself is too valuable to accept anything less than greatness. Continue to lead with empathy and integrity, and as always, I am wishing you the best.
