Maximizing Your Individual Impact
Every individual, regardless of title, background, or position, has a unique role in life and in organizational success. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Am I important?” Please know that you are. Frequently, when we think about leadership and success, we envision the large, grandiose picture of what this looks like. However, there can be true joy in falling in love with the ordinary and being exceptional in your own growth and self-leadership.
I would love for you to take a few minutes and just think about yourself. If you have a pen and paper, an iPad, or a notes section in your phone answer the following questions:
1. What steps am I currently taking to improve myself?
2. What habits or mindsets might be holding me back from accomplishing some of my goals?
3. Who do I admire as a leader, and what qualities do they possess that I want to embody?
4. What unique strengths do I bring to my relationships and to my organization?
5. When is the last time that I truly felt proud of myself?
Let’s take a deeper look into the last question. If it was difficult for you to identify a specific instance, you’re not alone. Many people struggle to celebrate themselves or recognize their own achievements. We get so used to dismissing our victories that we forget to celebrate the small ones, or any at all. Equally, sometimes we can be so focused on what’s next that we don’t take time to pause and reflect. Trust me, the next goal will be there—along the way take time to appreciate your own progress.
If it was easy for you to answer question 5, being able to recognize your own achievements is key in progressing with your own self-awareness. The ability to see yourself and recognize your accomplishments is meaningful. Often it means you took a chance on yourself, you stepped out of your comfort zone, or you may have even discovered a new strength. To take things a step further, also take time to evaluate how your personal accomplishment impacted your team or organization.
Every small step you take is a part of a bigger journey and a bigger purpose. When you’re able to answer these questions with intention, you’re also working towards shaping your life and career in alignment with what truly matters to you.
