Leading with Passion and Purpose
As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of leadership, it becomes apparent that those who can lead with passion and purpose have a unique ability to guide others. In this edition, we explore the intersection of passion, purpose, and inclusive leadership, discovering how these elements can drive positive change within our organizations and communities.
Is it possible to lead without passion and purpose? I believe there must be some part of you that is invested in the success of the organization or the team. However, I also believe the answer to this question has become more complex in the last few years. As a leader, there needs to be an understanding that every individual within the group has their own set of passions, beliefs, and emotions. We live in a society where some individuals expect that their work should bring fulfillment, whereas others may not. It may seem cliché but without knowing the people around you, their background, and the way they express themselves, it may be hard to consistently steer in the same direction. So, what if others are not as passionate, or invested in the overall success of the group? Some strategies can assist in igniting positive change and driving meaningful impact.
The Role of Inclusive Leadership: Inclusive leadership is about creating a culture where every voice is heard, and individuals are valued for their unique perspectives and contributions. Inclusive leaders recognize the strength in differences and regularly evaluate the individual and organizational behaviors that drive inclusion. Research from a recent MIT Sloan Review written by Donald and Charles Sull, found that a toxic working culture is the strongest predictor of industry-adjusted attrition—ten times more important than compensation in predicting people departing their workplace. In terms of defining toxic culture, #1 and #2 on that list nationally, were disrespectful and non-inclusive. People are making choices about their expectations in the workplace, and this includes being surrounded by leaders who are inclusive and willing to foster environments where people can grow and succeed.
Finding Purpose in Leadership: Many times, we forget about the purpose of our work with stressors and agendas that come with day-to-day deadlines and targets. However, the impact must never be devalued. At times we are so focused on the masses that we can forget the importance of reaching one person or influencing one major change. Remind those around you that they are not only seen but they are also celebrated—small victories are still victories. Fostering purpose helps to create empowerment, which allows room for creativity and vision. Let’s strive to keep reimagining and finding inspiration that continues to drive us forward.
