It’s Not You, It’s Me

Being Secure In Your Confidence

Do you really want more confidence?

Do you want less fear and insecurity?

Are you willing to admit some days great decision-making is hard to come by?

We may not always realize it in the moment—but sometimes what looks like confidence is panic in disguise.

Think about this way.

You have what you think is a fantastic idea, and all the signs are pointing to the fact that you probably need to pivot, but it was your idea. So, no matter what, you decide to ignore the obvious red flags and keep pushing forward.

Or maybe you can recall an instance where flexibility in the situation felt like failure, so you decided to stick to the original plan because you would rather go down swinging than admit defeat.

This may feel like being confident, but in reality, it’s leadership driven by rigidity. Here are a few phrases I would urge you to reconsider if you catch yourself frequently saying them:

“This is the way we’ve always done it.”

“Thanks, but I’ll figure it out myself.”

“If it weren’t for me, none of this would work.”

Here’s the truth, confidence is about trusting yourself, and when you’re able to trust yourself, you’re then able to ask questions, admit when you may have been wrong, and change directions when you need to. Even if things are different than before, you have the confidence to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

As you continue throughout your week my hope is that you’re able to continue walking in confidence and apply it to every facet of your life. Whether you’re looking at this from a lens of a workplace environment, hanging out with friends or family, or doing something new on your own time, evaluate the ways you are showing up in these environments.

Here are some questions I’d love for you to think about this week and do a quick check-in:

Where am I holding on too tight?

Is there an area I’m operating in insecurity instead of truth?

What’s holding me back—and what can I do about it?

You don’t always have to be right, but we are still working to evolve. As always, I’m wishing you the best.

P.S. If you’re looking to lead from a place of confidence—especially in a new role—my e-book, Leading From Within, was created just for you. It’s the ultimate guide for new managers and leaders who want to make a difference without losing themselves in the process.
