Dr. Leah’s Top Leadership Lessons of 2024 (Part 1)

As 2024 comes to a close, I’m reflecting on the leadership lessons that I’ve learned this year. These lessons are not just insights, they are actionable takeaways for personal and professional growth leading into 2025. This is Part 1 of a two-part series, and this edition will cover the first half of the lessons. I’m very excited to share them with you and I hope they resonate with you as we finish out the year.

Lesson 1: The Power of Adaptability

During this year workflows continued to change, and leaders who embraced flexibility were able to thrive. Navigating hybrid work models or adapting to changing technological advances like AI in leadership were huge! Those who were able to pivot quickly and lead with resilience continued to level up. As we move forward continue to think: embrace change, stay adaptable.

Lesson 2: Empathy as a Superpower

There are various roles in which people need to take actionable steps instantaneously and feelings can’t be taken into consideration. Think about professions where individuals are making split second decisions daily, i.e., surgeons, pilots, firefighters, EMT’s, and military personnel…the list can go on. However, empathy is a way to build trust within your team. This year, I realized empathy can transform relationships, and in any profession this is important. When you make it a priority to know the people you surround yourself with every day, it will strengthen dynamics and inspire collaboration.

Lesson 3: The Role of Clear Communication

Clear expectations are great for everyone. In a world where there are countless ways to communicate, I’ve seen firsthand how simplified messages turned uncertainty into achievement. One actionable item: when giving instructions ask team members to repeat back what they’re hearing to confirm understanding. Focus on the essentials and this can help ensure that everyone is working towards the same goal.

Lesson 4: Prioritizing Mental Well-Being

This year I made it a point to create space for mental well-being, whether that meant an evening walk, a 5-minute meditation, or a 1-page devotional. The results? Better energy, emotional regulation, and productivity. Schedule regular check-in’s and find the time, even if it’s 5 minutes. Your own health is the foundation of how well you can be for others.

Lesson 5: Blind Spots, Check for Them

We all have areas in our lives where we lack clarity. Think about some of your patterns, or assumptions that may be keeping you stuck. Don’t let your ego sabotage your success. I discovered that leaders who asked for feedback were able to strengthen relationships from trusted colleagues or mentors. Take time to reflect on your patterns and identify what areas need improvement heading into the new year.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the first half of leadership lessons from 2024; I encourage you to think about how they apply to your own journey. Next time, I’ll share the second half of my leadership lessons and as always, I am wishing you the best. Here’s to finishing 2024 strong together!
